The schedule of events for the 2016 Gordon Parks Celebration are as follows.

Thursday, November 3

  • 8:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m.
    Ft. Scott Chamber of Commerce Coffee at the Gordon Parks Museum.
  • 9:15 am-12:00 p.m.
    FSCC Senior Day & Expo. Area high school students will visit campus for tours, information, and more. The Gordon Parks Museum will be open for tours throughout the morning.
  • 2:00 p.m.
    Guided Trolley Tour of Gordon Parks’ Fort Scott. Meet at the entrance of the FSCC Ellis Fine Arts Center. Fee: $7.
  • 7:00 p.m.
    Showing of Chi-Raq, a 2015 American satirical musical drama film, directed and produced by Spike Lee and co-written by Lee and Kevin Willmott. Set in Chicago, the film focuses on the gang violence prevalent in neighborhoods on the city’s south side. The story is based on Aristophanes’ Lysistrata, a Classical Greek comedy. It stars Nick Cannon, Wesley Snipes, Teyonah Parris, Jennifer Hudson, Angela Bassett, John Cusack, and Samuel L. Jackson. Ellis Fine Arts Center Lobby and meeting Rooms. FREE STRONG CONTENT-Language, adult situations, violence.

Friday, November 4

    “A Conversation with Kevin” Theater-Ellis Family Fine Arts Center. FREE
  • 10:05 a.m. – 10:50 a.m.
    “A Conversation with Kevin, Part Two” Theater-Ellis Family Fine Arts Center. FREE
  • 11:05 a.m. – 11:50 a.m.
    “Interviewing Gordon” with Kevin Willmott and Karole Graham (who played Big Mabel in The Learning Tree). See an interview filmed in 2004 when Gordon Parks visited Fort Scott for the very first Celebration. FREE
  • 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.
    A “Moveable Feaste” sack lunch will be available for purchase in the lobby. Fee: $7:00 (may be purchased that day).
  • 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
    ROUNDTABLES Discussion of topics for adults and for students. Topics include Parks’ family history, Poetry in Performance, Film-Making Basics, Photography, Publishing, Filming the Learning Tree in Fort Scott, and more. Gordon Parks Museum and Ellis Fine Arts Center meeting rooms. FREE
  • 7:00 p.m.
    “Celebration Tribute Dinner” (Social Hour starts at 6:00 p.m.) Join us for an evening of celebration, dinner, and music by the band “Liz Finity.” Presentation of the “Gordon Parks Choice of Weapons Award” to filmmaker Kevin Willmott. Ellis Family Fine Arts Center. Fee: $25 Please reserve.

Saturday, November 5

  • 9:00 a.m.
    Guided Tour of Gordon Parks’ Fort Scott. Meet at the entrance of the FSCC Ellis Fine Arts Center. Fee: $7.
  • 10:30 a.m.
    Late Morning Breakfast at Nate’s Place. Enjoy a buffet breakfast, Mimosa’s, and special music. Fee: $15.00 Please reserve.
